Mitchell man injured in I-90 accident

SALEM - A Mitchell man was seriously injured at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday in a crash with construction vehicles on Interstate 90 about one-half mile west of the junction with U.S. Highway 81.

Victor M. Briggs, 29, was eastbound in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix when he approached a pickup pulling a trailer in the driving lane. The vehicle was being used by a construction crew working on the shoulder of I-90. Briggs attempted to move to the passing lane, but his vehicle struck the trailer and went out of control.

Briggs, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from his vehicle. He was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Michael Rawson, 51, a member of a Sioux City, Iowa, construction crew, was driving the pickup pulling the trailer. He was uninjured.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. The Hanson County Sheriff's Office, McCook County Sheriff's Office and McCook County EMTs assisted.
