Ask a Trooper: Time for a rule review on 3-vehicle combinations
Q: In traveling around Minnesota I see many combinations of RVs. I’ve been RVing many years and always try to stay up on the laws pertaining to them. My question is on triple combinations, on which opinion varies. I was always told that in pulling doubles, a fifth-wheel and another trailer, the fifth-wheel was to be no longer than 28 feet. The combined length was not to be longer than 60 feet. Now one RV dealer told me any combination works as long as the total length of the three vehicles doesn’t exceed 70 feet. I looked online at the Minnesota DMV, and they did not mention anything about a 28-foot first vehicle, only total length. Could you please clarify? I would love to pull my boat behind my fifth-wheel.
A: Now that summer is here and we see more trailers and combinations of vehicles on the road, it may be a good time to review the requirements regarding what is referred to as three-vehicle combinations.
Minnesota has allowed three-vehicle combinations for many years, and the law has changed slightly over the years. The dealership was correct in what they told you about the combination. I will give an overview of what the requirements are if you wish to drive with this type of combination.
Only a “fifth-wheel” coupling is allowed between the pickup truck and the middle vehicle.
The second trailer may only haul watercraft, a motorcycle, a motorized bicycle, off-highway motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, motorized golf cart or equestrian equipment or supplies. (Relates to horse riding equipment and supplies)
The total combination of vehicles does not exceed 70 feet.
The towing rating of the pickup truck is equal to or greater than the total weight of all vehicles being towed.
The trailer hitch assemblies, as well as the pickup truck hitch assembly, must conform to MN Statute §169.82.
The driver is at least 18.
No travel within the Twin Cities Metro area during weekday rush hour times: 6-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.
An experienced driver is the key when towing this type of combination. A three-vehicle combination sways more, has reduced handling capabilities and takes longer to stop.
