Sew A Ball
'I proved a lot of people wrong'

The world of beauty pageantry is about style, glamour and sequins. A whole lot of sequins. If you sew all of the sequins dresses from the opening number of the Miss South Carolina pageant together youd most likely have the worlds largest ready-to-hang disco ball.
What leaks through the rituals of pageant pomp and circumstance is confidence, poise and humility. Bree Boyce, Miss Capital City who was crowned Miss South Carolina 2011 Saturday night at the Township Auditorium, has all that and then some.
Boyce, a Florence native, will compete for the Miss America title in Las Vegas in January. After watching her for a week, one wouldnt be surprised if she won. A few reasons why:
• Shes witty, talented and she doesnt bend.
I wasnt very shaken up at all, Boyce said at a Sunday morning news conference when asked what was going through her mind when she had to re-sing Tu Tu Piccola Iddio because her first attempt was marred by technical issues. With the right coaching, Boyce could sing opera professionally.
• Shes got an back story. Boyce, who won a preliminary swimsuit round, has lost more than 110 pounds through old-fashioned hard work. At the news conference, she held up a pair of faded blue, size 18 jeans that she used to wear.
I proved a lot of people wrong. Winning that swimsuit award was the icing on the cake, she said, before adding, the cake I didnt eat the night before.
• Shes very likable. After thanking just about everyone she knew, Boyce did impressions of Reba McEntire, Cher and Paula Deen. She also cracked wise after being bestowed several gifts, including a $3,000 Omega watch and a beaver fur coat.
I dont think I ever have to shop again, Boyce, 22, said.
In a word, Boyce has got .
Caitlen Patton, the Miss South Carolina Teen, should fare well at Miss Americas Outstanding Teen competition next month in Orlando. There were few, if any, who rivaled Pattons expressiveness while performing. The 17-year-old Miss Columbia Teen sang Im a Star, managing a proper balance between theatrics and technique.
I wanted (the judges) to know this is what I wanted, said Patton, who wants to be a Broadway star.
Shes well on her way.
Runners-up for Miss S.C.: Miss Greater Lyman, Mya Kayler, first runner-up; Miss Greater Carolina, Lindley Mayer, second runner-up; Miss Greater Mauldin Lauren Cabaniss, third runner-up; and Miss Summerville, Lara Scott, fourth runner-up.

Some will learn to sew, and they will be given sewing machines, fabric and thread to get started. Others will learn skills such as hairdressing, gardening and rug making. They, too, will receive starter materials and continuing education, Ball said,

You could sew the buttons onto the sock, with the help of an adult. On the coloured paper of your choice, draw two dog ears and cut this out. Stick these onto the sock using glue. Do not forget to stick a pink or red coloured tongue onto the mouth.

Both sides had opportunities to sew the game up. Waitohi first-five Daniel Hawkins, a standout in the match, missed a couple of penalty goal attempts he would normally have landed. At the other end, replacement Awatere wing David Pope had the

Cut 36 football shapes (American football, not soccer!) from your fabric. The shapes should be approximately 2 inches (5cm) long and one inch (2.5cm) wide.
Important: Make all of the football shapes exactly the same size, and allow an extra 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) for the seams . 12 shapes from each of three different colors works very nicely for this project.Unfold the remaining edge and sew half a side of it to the third piece (leaving an opening for stuffing). This will create a three sided wedge which resembles a (somewhat fat) orange section.
If using three fabrics, use one fabric per side of your wedges so that you can “change colors” on the ball later. Sew all 12 wedges in a similar manner. Clip the points of the wedges away before turning to prevent bunching. Turn the seams to the middle and the “right” or patterned side out. Stuff firmly with batting and stitch closed carefully.
