St. Petersburg police seize shoes, purses suspected of being knockoffs

ST. PETERSBURG — Police seized hundreds of faux Nike shoes, Coach purses and Ed Hardy-labeled clothes in an investigation into counterfeit retailing at a shoe shop Tuesday.

Following an anonymous tip, undercover police officers served a search warrant on Shoe Fashion, 3711 Fifth Ave N.

Police wheeled away nearly 800 pairs of shoes they suspected of being knockoffs, many in Nike Air Jordan boxes. Nine fake Coach purses — with flawed stitching — were taken, police said. Dozens of shirts, jeans and shorts labeled Coogi, Lacoste, Ed Hardy and Polo were also seized.

No one was arrested during the raid. Police said the store's owner, Alam Shikdar, 45, was not there. He could not be reached for comment.

An employee allowed officers inside the white-brick store, which had a surveillance camera outside and the names of the clothing makers on the windows.

The estimated value of the merchandise exceeded $100,000, a threshold that could make any charge a second-degree felony, police said.

Representatives of the manufacturers assisted the investigation, police said.
