Cops bust fake ID gang in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Elements of Philippine National Police’s Highway Patrol Group and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group have arrested 4 suspects in Recto, Manila for producing counterfeit government identification cards.

Ronnie Flores and his accomplice were arrested through an entrapment operation conducted by authorities on Tuesday.

Through Flores, authorities located the hideout of 2 other suspects in Manila, where the fake IDs are produced.

Authorities seized fake Land Transportation Office and Professional Regulation Commission licenses in the hideout.

Flores said the fake driver IDs are being sold at P250 each.

Fake identification cards and permits bearing the name of other government agencies were also confiscated by police.

"Nakakaalarma kasi dahil halos lahat ng sangay ng gobyerno natin ay nabibiktima nila,” said police Inspector Nick Ledesma.

The suspects were brought to Camp Crame in Quezon City.

Authorities said a follow-up operation will be conducted to arrest the group’s financier.

Round Lake couple arrested for providing fake IDs during DUI stop ...

A man who police say lied about his identity after an arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol had to be identified by fingerprints, according to a Grayslake police official.

The man, identified as Belisario Garcia-Vargas, 23, of Round Lake, was charged with obstructing justice after a traffic stop on June 20 for identifying himself to a police officer by using a fake Mexican passport, said Grayslake Police Cmdr. Matt McCutcheon.

A passenger in Garcia-Vargas’ car, Maria Colotl, 18, also of Round Lake, was also arrested and charged with obstructing justice. Police said she was in possession of a fraudulent identification card.

Officers initially pulled Garcia-Vargas over for erratic driving, McCutcheon said, noting that his truck was moving over the fog line and the center line as he drove on Route 120 near Atkinson Road.

When the officer asked him for his license, Garcia-Vargas said he didn’t have one and didn’t have proof of insurance, but identified himself with a Mexican passport – one with someone else’s name on it, McCutcheon said.

Garcia-Vargas failed several standardized field sobriety tests and blew .16 on a preliminary breath test, McCutcheon said. That’s twice the legal blood alcohol limit for driving in Illinois.

After Garcia-Vargas was placed under arrest, the officer spoke with Colotl and offered her a ride to the police station to wait for a driver, McCutcheon said. She accepted, and as part of standard procedure, the officer checked the contents of her purse before she got in the squad car.

Inside her purse, the officer found a Mexican Matricula Consular identification card bearing a different name and date of birth than the identification card she had previously presented to officers, McCutcheon said.

The officer took Garcia-Vargas’ passport and Colotl’s second ID card into evidence. Garcia-Vargas had to be identified through finger prints, which showed his true ID through an arrest history from a different state, McCutcheon said.

Garcia-Vargas was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol – aggravated because it was not his first arrest for DUI. He was also charged with driving without a valid license, driving without insurance and improper lane change, in addition to the charges of obstructing justice and unlawful possession of a fraudulent ID.

He remains held in Lake County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.

Colotl was charged with unlawful possession of a fraudulent ID. She was transported to Lake County Bond Court on June 20, but was released on a personal recognizance bond.
