Charles Saliba and his iconic, radio-friendly voice are instantly recognisable and for good reason. Maria Stivala meets up with the radio and TV broadcaster for a trip down memory lane.
He's covered everything from Italian music to history and culture. Charles Saliba's journey throughout the media landscape has been one of constnat evolution, but one thing remained constant through the years. The audience's love for the household name who has been part of our lives for nearly 40 years.
I had the opportunity to sit down for a chat with Charles and his charming family. Surrounded by his wife and their grandchildren, I started to glimpse a different man to the TV personality most of us have grown up listening to.
It's interesting how we often seem to have a pre-conceived idea of a media personality based on what we see on TV or hear on the radio. What kind of lives do these people lead? I was determined to shed some light on this question. At first glance, Charles Saliba is indeed the personality I may pictured after following his radio and TV shows, but I was intrigued: what is beyond the façade of the public persona?
I happen to have an addictive curiosity to find out more about people who I believe, as the cliché goes, "made it". How did Charles' journey start? He immediately recalls his teenage years where a new structure in the education system meant that his plans to become a teacher were stalled. Rather unexpectedly, Charles found himself looking for a job. Like any other ambitious teenager, he opted to experiment and did a voice and screen test for television. Fate called upon him, and completely by chance, he received a call that would lead him towards a completely different path – a path he had always secretly had an inclination to follow. He was enticed, and suddenly and totally to what he expected, he found himself presenting a live evening TV show with only a few hours' notice! "Naturally I was terrified, but also felt that giving up on this opportunity was not even an option." The conversation drifted to the many opportunities we might surpass in our life, out of sheer fear.
After this first step in the new direction, Charles had to keep the momentum going. With a new-found passion for broadcasting, he kept pushing himself towards bigger and better projects and within a short time became one of the leading names in Malta. In part, he attributes his quick success to the fact that he is eager to learn and constantly looks to improve himself.
