Library tax checks out as a fair vote in the fall
I love libraries. I grew up in a slice of suburbia without one, though our eastern neighbor had a sweet one. My family paid a fee so we could use it, but it wasn't always easy getting over there.
Now I live in a city with a grand but shaky library system. This extraordinary gift, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, is forever strapped for cash. The city will kick in only $40,000 for it this year -- a pitiful fraction of what surrounding suburbs devote to their libraries to flesh out Regional Asset District funding.
This November, the city's voters will be asked whether we should raise property taxes by 0.25 mills and devote that money (about $3.25 million) to libraries.
For a property owner, that would work out to $2.09 a month, or $25 a year, on every $100,000 of assessed value. It's a bargain compared to the deal I have with my cable company, but I don't expect every voter will see it that way.
You're a reader, though. Maybe you also see that almost anyone can get $10, $20 and upward in value from a library each month without breaking a sweat.
I realize that's crass. We're talking about libraries, so I should be more eloquent. I should say that the great books are like the elevation of the host to me, their presence transformed, their effect indelible and everlasting.
I would, but Pat Conroy already strung those exact words together in "My Reading Life,'' a best-seller I recently checked out from the Downtown branch, along with another book and three movies. That transaction cost me exactly nothing.
Beat that, Netflix, with your little $7.99 a month deal.
Library supporters have collected more than 11,000 signatures for this referendum, an extraordinary number, but there might still be tens of thousands of voters who haven't been inside a library in a while, and who don't realize what they're missing.
So let me just tell you why I'm voting yes in November.
There are the books, of course -- some of the best the English language has to offer, with a generous sampling of some of the worst. Click on the website www.clpgh.org and you can access the 3.2 million books, DVDs, CDs and even vinyl record albums circulating in the Allegheny County system. There are also now 18,000 e-books downloadable from the library website.
Those who aren't Internet-savvy can have a librarian find an item for them. Anyone with a library card can have the book or movie delivered to the branch of their choice within days.
