One writer's homage to the arts ... and Bartlesville, Okla.

Magic happens, especially when we travel.

Special moments -- both anticipated and unexpected -- have a way of popping up like mushrooms on a warm, humid day whenever we are abroad in the world, whether on a romantic couple's visit to Paris or a solo adventure to a small oil town in the American Midwest.

Bartlesville, Okla., was where magic materialized for me recently thanks in part to three extraordinary men: orchestral conductor Gustav Meier, violinist Joshua Bell and an architect named Frank Lloyd Wright .

Let me explain. It was in mid-June that this veteran arts and travel writer arrived in Bartlesville, home to ConocoPhillips and a population of about 35,000, 45 miles north of Tulsa. This was not an assignment for the Hearst Connecticut Media Group , but rather a "busman's holiday," a vacation of sorts to attend a highlight of the 10-day 27th OK Mozart International Festival, reportedly one of the largest nonprofit summer music festivals in the country with classical, folk and contemporary fare.

My particular interest was the festival's Saturday evening Grand Finale at the town's 1,700-seat concert hall, starring the 43-year-old Bell -- arguably the greatest violinist in the world whose boyish good looks, "breathtaking virtuosity" and "tone of rare beauty" are legendary -- and the Michigan-based Maestro Meier -- who will soon be celebrating his 40th anniversary season as music director of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony -- as guest conductor of the Amici New York Orchestra .

We expected to be dazzled -- and we were not disappointed. Bell performed Mozart's Adagio, K. 261, and Vieuxtemps' Concerto No. 5 with such artistry, sensitivity and technical brilliance that many in the audience were left in teary-eyed awe. Under Meier's baton, the orchestra cast its own enchanting spell on two Mozart overtures and Beethoven's Symphony No. 2.

Seated in the hall with several members of Meier's family -- including wife Emy (a lawyer, writer and accomplished musician in her own right), two daughters and two grandchildren -- I found myself delighting in watching them, their faces reflecting pride and happiness, as they reveled in watching Meier guide the orchestra and collaborate with Bell. Magical moments I will long remember -- and reason enough to have made the 12-hour airport-shuttle-fly-drive door-to-door trek from Bridgeport to Bartlesville (via New York/LaGuardia, Detroit and Tulsa).
