DA: Woman denied disabled mother medication, causing her death

“She died of a pulmonary embolism from a blood clot that likely would not have formed if her daughter had been giving her prescribed blood-thinning medication,” said Contra Costa deputy district attorney Jason Peck, who specializes in elder abuse cases. “Janell Hatch told police that she had the prescription refilled after her mother died, before she called 911. She also called the attorney before 911.”

Janell Hatch, 51, now faces up to 11 years in prison, charged with permitting a disabled elder to suffer and a charge enhancement for neglect resulting in death. Hatch pleaded not guilty to the charges in Contra Costa County court earlier this month. Her attorney did not return a call for comment Thursday.

Adult protective services (APS) first investigated Janell Hatch's treatment of her mother in 2007 based on a neighbor's tip, Peck said. Betty Hatch, who was immobile and could not feed herself, was admitted into a convalescent home soon after. Janell Hatch moved her mother back into their Montclair home in March 2010 and hired a nursing service to provide her mother at-home care. The nursing service reported Janell Hatch to APS the next month because she was not providing her mother with any food and a second investigation was launched, Peck said.

On April 28, 2010, the day she told nurses she was taking her mom to the dentist, Janell Hatch checked into a Pleasant Hill hotel using a fake name and moved in with her mother, whose presence was hidden from hotel staff over the course of a four-month stay, Peck said.

The daughter had paid in cash for the room through September, but for some unknown reason checked into another Pleasant Hill hotel on July 20, again under a fake name. That time she paid cash through July 25. She would later tell police that she was hiding from an ex-boyfriend, Peck said.

“Once again, the hotel had no idea her mom was staying with her,” Peck said. “She'd keep her mom in one room, ask the hotel staff to clean the other, and alternate rooms back and forth.” Betty Hatch died on July 22, 2010 and her daughter received felony charges in April. Hatch is out of jail on bail and returns to court on July 17 to set a preliminary hearing date.
