Inner Life Of A Cell

Charles Bronson's kind words for sick cell mate

HIS reputation is for being Britain’s most violent prisoner – but dangerous Charles Bronson has a soft side.

The notorious 58-year-old hardman has been writing letters to a fellow robber who was told he was terminally ill after he collapsed on Boxing Day 2007.

Bronson’s letters and cards to former jail mate John “Alfie” Lodge tell him to “keep your chin up” and “slow down, chill out”.

Lodge, of Pontypool, who has spent more than 20 years inside, including four years in a cell next door to Aberystwyth-born Bronson, at Long Lartin jail in Evesham, Worcestershire, said the letters had helped him.

He said: “He has given me an inner strength through writing to me going through what he is going through.

“If he can go through living in a cage – like I did with him – and he might not get out ever, then I can go through this with these tumours.

“When he writes to me, when he knows I have broken down, he writes and he says, ‘Alfie, you keep your chin up or you won’t be having that pint with me’.

“And I think, ‘Well, I have to have a pint with him (when he gets out)’.”

In one letter Bronson, who saw an initial seven-year jail sentence extended to 14 years and has since been jailed for life, told him: “Alf, don’t even think of death. People who think it die. They sleep and forget to awake. So look ahead. Only the past is dead.”

And he urged his friend, who lives in Pontypool, to relax.

“Slow down, chill out,” he said.

“You can go on another 10, 20 or even 30 (years) if you want it. Me, I’m going for 120.”

Bronson, subject of the 2008 film bearing his adopted surname, met Lodge after the robber was locked up in 1987 after getting caught with a sawn-off shotgun as he was about to raid a Barry post office. He is understood to have been involved with more than 30 post office and 20 jewellery store robberies in South Wales.

Now he is planning a book about his life called Poachers and Postmen.

Bronson – initially jailed for just seven years in 1974 for armed robbery – encouraged his jail pal to start writing himself, because it would ensure his posterity.

“Get it done,” he urged, “It will live on when you are gone.

“Get your side out because the Old Bill and the courts have had their say on you. Now it’s your turn on them. You can make a few quid at the same time.

For those of you who know a little bit about biochemistry you'll recognize a lot of what's going on in this (love the dynein/kinesin walking movement) , and for anyone who would benefit from the addition of narration you can find it here .
