What Is A Pac
Pac-12 football: All about Oregon (and Willie Lyles, of course)
*** The Ducks could very well have a semi-believable explanation of their own, and that might be all they need.
The NCAA rulebook has a fair amount of gray area when it comes to the street agents/middle men/whatever you want to call Lyles — it hasn’t caught up to the 21st century way of doing business.
Which means there’s a lot riding on the outcome, not only for Oregon but the NCAA.
Other programs, and other street agents, will be watching closely. If the Ducks escape relatively unscathed, you can bet everyone else will charge into the wiggle room.
*** Reading the Yahoo! report, I wondered for the first time if Chip Kelly’s job might be on the line.
I’m not saying he will get fired or should get fired — we don’t know exactly what the NCAA will determine and we don’t know what Kelly has told his bosses at Oregon or NCAA investigators.
I’m just saying that, for the first time, I can see it happening.
Kelly’s actions — “scrambling” to acquire scouting material to justify the payment to Lyles; apparently lying to the Oregonian’s John Canzano (link above) — are those of a man who knows he did something he shouldn’t have.
*** Here’s what else I can now image:
The champions of both the Pac-12 South (USC) and the North (Oregon) being ineligible for postseason play.
That would be so Southwest Conference.
*** One thing that should make Oregon fans very nervous: NCAA investigations tend to uncover violations above and beyond the infractions initially alleged.
See: Hobert, Billy Joe.
*** Nothing on the line for the Oregon football program, save everything it has accomplished in the past 2-3 years.
If you’re caught cheating during your only time spent as one of the nation’s elite programs, then the accomplishment becomes a sham and you have nothing left.
*** But in many ways the damage has already been done.
Even if Oregon successfully wandered into the gray area and the NCAA is unable to identify any violations, the Ducks have lost any and all claim to moral and ethical high ground.
They are neck deep in the muck, like so many other programs they purport to be above. And from Corvallis to Seattle to Heritage Hall to the Plains of Auburn, everyone will know it.
*** Last thought: Many Ducks fans have asked why I hate Oregon. The answer is that I don’t hate Oregon — the Hotline is an equal-opportunity critic. The barbs follow the news.

The PAC man returned to his stump speech. “I do not accept limits on my free speech,” he said. “But I do accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Fifty dollars or less, please, because then I don't have to keep a record of who gave it to me.
What more can he do as commissioner of the Pac-12? Scott is a conquering hero and perhaps the most powerful man in college sports. It sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? He has been on the job for a scant two years and five days.

What is a PAC?
A PAC, or Political Action Committee, is an organization that receives contributions or makes expenditures in excess of $1,000 for the purpose of influencing a federal election. Monies raised by PACs are generally used to produce commercials, radio spots, and other advertising materials that promote the group’s political agenda.
A “Super PAC” is officially known as an “ independent expenditure only committee,” which means that Steven Colbert has federal permission to raise unlimited funds, but is not allowed to coordinate directly with political parties or candidates.
Simply put, this means that Colbert’s Super PAC can raise as much money as it can and promote whatever political agenda the comedian pleases. Election regulations governing Super PACs are much more lenient than for individual candidates or political parties.
So, what is Colbert planning to do with the money he raises?
Colbert said in a live statement to the press yesterday that he doesn’t know what he’ll do with the funds he’ll collect through his PAC, aptly named Colbert Super PAC . “Give it to me, and let’s find out,” he jokes.
Of course, one of the consequences (intentions?) of Colbert’s efforts to institute a PAC is to raise the general awareness of the nation’s federal campaign laws and to highlight the absurdities he perceives within our election process.
