Couple opens flight school at Lenawee County Airport
The aircraft are two-seaters, weigh no more than 1,320 pounds, and fly no faster than about 140 mph. They can take off and land on shorter runways and they run on the same gasoline that goes in a car. And they cost much less than a “regular” single-engine plane. A light sport plane might cost in the neighborhood of $90,000 to $150,000, said Dan Walker, whereas “the closest thing in general aviation is $210,000, and it doesn’t (fly) much different.” Besides being cheaper to buy and operate, another advantage is in the training necessary to fly a light sport aircraft. A student can be licensed to fly these planes in about half the time as it would take for a private-pilot license. It officially takes 20 hours to earn a sport pilot certification and 40 hours for a private pilot certificate, although according to the Walkers most people actually put in as much as double the time on either one. The school has two instructors in addition to Dan: Tim Koelewijn and Kerry Brown. Between them, the trio is certified in light sport, private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine and tailwheel instruction, and all have plenty of flying hours under their belts. Flight instruction costs $45 per hour. According to Jo, people can expect to spend in the general range of $3000 to $4000 to earn a light-sport license, and between $6000 and $10000 for a private-pilot certification. Financing is available.

No one likes returning to work after vacation but a beautiful day over the Midwest dampened the blow slightly. Of course I managed to be working a route the included a group of t-storms starting to build over western NY. The storms were picking up water from Lake Erie and lift from the warming shore. Not being a part of a frontal system these storms were easy to circumnavigate and a good summer weather warmup after being gone for the last couple of weeks. It seems always better to hear about the storms you missed or be at home watching them instead of trying to get through them.
