Everyone entering or in Middle School or High School is invited to travel the universe via You Are Here, the Summer Reading Club for Young Adults at the Garden City Public Library. Registration begins Monday, June 13th and continues throughout July. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Club is Travel.
Kick off the “You Are Here” Summer Reading Club with an evening of fun on Monday, June 27th, from 5:30 - 8:30PM. YAs are invited to join their friends and see the movie National Treasure, starring Nicholas Cage. Enjoy refreshments and participate in a “treasure hunt” by going on a scavenger hunt in the library. Registration begins on June 13th on Eventkeeper. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own Library card to register.
Doris Benter will guide YAs in the creation of travel journals on Wednesday, June 29th, from 7 - 8PM. Cut and arrange vintage, themed travel images before using decoupage to adhere them onto journal covers. Make a personal record of the places you visit while “You Are Here.” Registration is limited to 20 YAs and begins on June 15th on Eventkeeper. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own Library card to register.
Explore graphic novels and talk about your favorites: Batman, Twilight Zone, manga, comic books and more on Wednesday, July 6th from 7:30 - 8:30 PM. YA Librarian Marge Kelly will present the Top 10 Graphic Novels for 2011. Refreshments will be served. Registration is limited to 25 YAs and begins June 8th on Eventkeeper. All ‘tweens and teens must have their own Library card to register.
Join the Summer Reading Club by signing up at the YA desk or filling out an online registration by visiting the website www.gardencitypl.org and click on Young Adults. All registrants get a signing bonus prize bag. Read anything of your choosing: a summer assignment book, a recreational book, a comic book, newspaper, magazine, or eBook. You can also listen to an audiobook or Playaway. Fill out a mini-review form and hand it in for a raffle prize. Reviews can be done on paper and put in the raffle box in the Tweens N’ Teens Room or emailed to mkelly@gardencitypl.org and a print out will be placed in the raffle box for you. Win cool prizes!
Whether you travel near or far this summer, send a postcard to the YA department at the Library. Postcards will be displayed. Your imagination can take you on a journey as well. Travel to another world through reading, create a postcard about that journey and send it in to the Library! Keep a reading diary and show it to the Young Adult Librarian before Wednesday, August 12th. This will make you eligible to receive an invitation for the Back to School Bash without entering the weekly raffles. This year’s Back to School Bash will be held on Wednesday, August 31st. There will be a pizza party with a talent show and games, door prizes and auctions, and certificates of achievement.

You've heard of the spiky-haired, Japanese tofu delivery driver who invented drifting; consider Jason Lewis his bald-headed, USA counterpart. His brutal, 62-mile commute from his home in Santa Clarita, California, to his wrench-monkey job at a shop in not-so-nearby Lancaster is a ribbon of twisty, desert, mountain roads. If you're going to be a commuter drone, you might as well have some fun.
"I love road racing," Jason says. "I've been racing cheap stuff forever: bikes, Sportsman circle-track cars, anything that was low-buck." Jason's friends know he is the one to call when a junker is spotted for sale. "I love a car that doesn't run that has boxes of parts around it. I want to make it run." The car was an '82 Z28 that had been parked with a blown head gasket and disassembled for repairs, apparently never to see the light of day again. The score was $500.
The plan was to set it up for the track and dial it in on the way to work. Jason scored a T56 from a '95 LT1 Camaro and wheels from a C5 Corvette, and he traded a beater truck for a replacement 350. He knew he'd have to splurge on the suspension, brakes, and safety parts to make the car fast. "When it rains, I practice my drifting. The car is reliable and comfortable, and even in the high desert with 118-degree weather, the car is really nice."
On the track, he gets dismissed in the pits and respected on the course because the car has skills. "Whenever there is an opportunity for track time, I am doing it. Streets of Willow (Rosamond, California) is my favorite, but for pure fright factor, Buttonwillow (Buttonwillow, California) is great for super-fast long corners. A typical weekend of Time Attack is about $150 to $250. If you win, you get recognition and some cash off the next entry fee. "In the pits, I get condescending talk while I am removing the T-tops. The M5 guys pity me until I cross over behind them in every corner in the mirror. Then they drive off the track because they are watching me instead of the road.
