Faculty and staff began a long-anticipated move into the newly finished addition to Hogue Hall last week.

Hogue Hall is home to Central Washington University’s industrial and engineering technology programs, which offer degrees in construction management, industrial technology, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, technology education and safety and health management.

The 34,600-square-foot building was built in 1970. University officials saw a need to add onto and renovate the building because it no longer met the demands of the 21st century and was too small to house growing programs.

With the building addition nearly complete, staff members are almost finished clearing out the old building in preparation for its renovation.

The total project cost is $27.2 million — $19.2 for the addition and $7.8 for the renovation. The addition was mostly completed May 13. The renovation is set to begin July 5 and be completed in April 2012. The project was split into two phases so it would not displace students, staff and faculty, said CWU’s Barry Caruthers, Hogue project manager.

The architectural firm that designed the addition is LMN Architects out of Seattle. Clark Construction out of Spokane is the general contractor for the addition and the renovation. The entire building is expected to be in use for fall quarter 2012.

Old Hogue

On a tour of the old Hogue this week, Caruthers discussed the various upgrades the building will undergo in the coming months. The foundry on the right as people enter through the loading dock will be equipped with a new mechanical system, lights, electrical boxes, improved ventilation and a new paint job.

The old machine shop will be turned into a metal engineering lab. General classrooms will be brought up to speed with multimedia tools, including document cameras, projectors and other teaching devices that have become standard on campus, Caruthers said.

The concrete floors throughout the building and the open ceilings will remain.

She is calm and well-behaved in house and extremely gentle with children who crawl over and maul her constantly, but she loves it! She is extremely intense and all business once the gun and vest comes out!
