Bethany Farmer's Market Ushers in Summer

There is now a social—and sustainable way to spend your Saturday mornings in Bethany. The Bethany Farmer’s Market is once again in operation and ready to serve all of your culinary needs.

Not only will this summer's farmer's market feature the typical produce, locally made cheeses, fresh flowers and and soaps often found at such events, a new addition of fish and meat are available today. 

"The farmer's market has grown quite a bit over a few years," says event organizer Nelly Rabinowitz. She got to work organizing this year's market last October, as soon as the 2010 season concluded. "We'll have Mariah's hot sauce and relish, cookies, meat and fish, and een such items as paper beads made from recycled paper."

The market, which was three years ago all but defunct , has been revitalized thanks to the efforts of Bethany Planning and Zoning alternate Nelly Rabinowitz. The idea of revitalizing the market was in the interest of combating the troubling American obesity rate, she believes, while also giving citizens the ability to easily purchase sustainable food that is not only locally grown but sold by people who live and work in the region. Rabinowitz shared her enthusiasm by encouraging locals to come out to the market and peddle their goods.

“Let’s stir up the local economy,” she said. “Let’s see who’s selling jams and jellies.”

Rabinowitz’s stand sells feta, ricotta and c hèvre cheese as well as Greek yogurt. The goat products are organic and contain no pesticides or hormones. In addition, her stand sells relish and soap.
