Keep cool on holiday: tips for plus size women

It is 10pm and I am sitting here in 30 plus degree heat and the normal wind gusts of up to 30KM an hour, which I normally hate and for once have disappeared, would be more than welcome right now. Summers where I live are normally well into the 30’s but are usually accompanied by a strong breeze which cools the day down. I am sitting at my desk reflecting on my hot day at work. A few children went home (I work in a school) because of the heat with many more threatening not to come in tomorrow as the heat wave continues. The trouble is, here there are no trees and little other shade. My director commented “but this is what the tourists want, this is good.” But really, could a tourist adapt to this heat from the North’s 15 degrees you have in the UK? You may answer “hell, yes!” But do you know how to keep cool in this heat? And would you know how to keep healthy in this heat? Here are some tips on how plus size women can keep cool and healthy in hot and arid climates.

Wear natural fabrics such as cotton and linen to keep cool . Synthetic fabrics tend to make you sweat more and make you feel uncomfortable. Opt for loose fitting clothes such as trousers and shirts. Dresses will also keep you cool however I find this allows the skin to rub which can cause more heat and discomfort. Wear light colours that will reflect the heat rather than absorb it. Try and find a breeze. The breeze, when combined with your hot body will help cool you down. If you have an option, stay near the coast as there is normally a sea breeze that will help you keep cool. If at home or a hotel, stand in a tepid shower. This will help you cool down. Failing this dab cool but not cold water on your face, neck, and other extremities. Avoid bathing in cold water as this will make you hotter as your body uses more energy to regain temperature. Unless of course you are by the sea in which case I recommend you go and stand in it! This will help you to keep cool for sure! Keep hydrated! Where ever you are make sure you have a bottle of water. It is very easy to get dehydrated and you do not want to react to the problem but prevent it in the first place. Drink plenty of water on a regular basis. Protect your eyes, head, and skin. Even if it is overcast that sun can still cause a lot of damage. Get the sun-factor on, wear sun glasses to protect your eyes, and wear a hat to keep the sun off your head.
