Scrambled eggs on a mansion porch

There was a time when I had the conceit that I could get in my car and at every crossroads, I could find a story.  I could go to Argo Corners and there would be Ian Barnes, turning flapjacks and remembering the pet rooster that hung around the place. These days they’re talking about baling hay, which doesn’t excite me.

You don’t get much interesting column material in hay, so it was of some curiosity to ramble off to Clinton and sit on the big front porch of the old George Curtis mansion and have breakfast.

On occasion each summer, the Clinton Women’s Club serves scrambled eggs, juice and muffins on the porch of the brick mansion. It was a sense of grandiosity to dine on the same porch where I could presume that Mr. Curtis — once the richest man in town — dined in morning splendor on a hot day. I’m certain that it was eggs benedict, served on silver, and not scrambled eggs on a paper plate.

The Clinton Women’s Club is to be congratulated for preserving this behemoth of a mansion. Mr. Curtis, a lumber baron, built the               three-story palace in 1885 on 5th Avenue. This was wealthy man’s row because so many of the city’s super-rich chose to reside along a street that today is wider than four lanes of interstates.

While eating muffins on Mr. Curtis’s shady porch, it is thorny to envision the grandiose life of Clinton’s extremely wealthy about the turn of the century. An entry had been built so guests could daintily alight from their carriages without missing a step … while not far away stood the small frame houses of his minions who made Mr. Curtis a jillionaire, or at least a multi-millionaire.
