MCC Farmers' Market opens for season

The Manchester Community College Farmers’ Market opened for the season on Wednesday, June 29. “You could almost get everything you need for the week,” said Manchester resident Janet Heller. “I love the community and the friendliness of the market,” added Heller, who has been visiting the market every summer.

The market offers a wide range of items, including fruits and vegetables, baked goods, dairy products and food made on-site. There’s also goat milk soap, an assortment of products containing lavender, maple syrup, bird houses, jewelry and dried flower arrangements.

“It’s so nice to get fresh fruits and veggies,” said Windsor Locks resident Heidi Higgins, who is an instructor at . Higgins also likes the goat milk soap made by Colchester resident Marcy Furphy of Mayflower Soaps. Furphy raises her own goats and said the soap is especially good for people with sensitive skin.

Sweet Pea uses goat milk for its chevre and feta cheese, as well as yogurt. Stan Hayes of North Granby also sells fresh goat and cow milk, as well as cow milk yogurt. “I’m addicted to his goat cheese,” said Shirley McCray of Manchester.

The Farmers’ Market takes place Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 5:30 through October. The market is situated under the shade trees near the Manchester Bicentennial Band Shell, with parking just off of Ramey Drive. In addition to the vendors, local musicians perform every week, and tables and chairs are available for relaxing.

On opening day, Graciela Gutierrez offered free heirloom tomato plants from the Community Garden. “It’s a wonderful space,” said Gutierrez about the garden, “and the growers are unique people.” All but one of the 40 plots in the Community Garden have been planted.

While some of the visitors on opening day found the market by chance, others make a point of visiting the weekly market. “I come to the market purposely,” said Dianne Lenti of Manchester. She stopped to talk with many of the vendors about their products, including Claudia Cormier of Bolton, who makes arrangements using her own dried flowers.

Several vendors are returning again this year to the market, including Olivia’s Garden of Columbia, with the Puckett family growing all types of vegetables and some berries. They also sell maple syrup. Other produce vendors include Beckett’s Farm of Glastonbury and Thompson Street Farm from South Glastonbury. While Beckett’s Farm will have a full range of vegetables, Thompson Street Farm specializes in greens, as well as home-made products featuring lavender. “It’s a great market,” said Brenda Sullivan of Thompson Street Farm. “I’m a micro-farm, so I can’t do large markets. And the music’s great.
