Hotels fill up as big week for city looms

Brisbane is likely to be jam- packed this week with hotel rooms selling for up to $1100 a night as thousands of football fans hit the city for history-making rugby league and union clashes that will pump millions of dollars into the cash-strapped tourism industry. The hotel squeeze has been made even tighter because the city will be a mix of sport, culture and business. The Asia Pacific City Summit will run from Wednesday to Friday, with guest speakers Sir Richard Branson and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, and the Surrealism exhibition is on at the Gallery of Modern Art. Training added to the menu; Restaurants cop a serve

You walk into a restaurant, no one greets you. You're (eventually) seated and then promptly forgotten. During dinner, your wine and water glasses remain unfilled. When the food arrives it's the wrong order, your dishes aren't cleared, the waiter keeps calling you guys and the attitude's so thick you could spread it a metre deep on the dining room floor. It's a common scenario. But help may be at hand. Perth's dire restaurant service standards may become a thing of the past if the Australian Hotels Association and Premier Colin Barnett have their way. The State Government is putting its weight behind initiatives to improve service standards in restaurants and pubs in WA. Next month, the AHA will launch the training programme Service With A Smile, which will be available free to all WA hospitality workers. It will be a 90-minute online program which, despite its obvious limitations, will put service front and centre in people's minds, according to AHA State boss Bradley Woods. Gen-Y attitude cheeses off customers

The number one favourite gripe about restaurant service is customers being ignored, according to a Twitter poll undertaken by The Weekend West this week. But it was by no means the only complaint. The poll attracted hundreds of responses. A close second was attitude and its subset, Gen-Y attitude. One respondent replied that the attitude problem was worse when they assume they know more than the customer. Another respondent summed up what's irritating with: When they're rude, arrogant, abrupt. I can even deal with delayed service as long as the person who serves me is courteous.
