Black & Decker’s guide to room additions will answer any question you have about building an addition on your home. The book starts with a photo gallery of numerous types of additions from the outside and inside.
Pretty pictures aren’t enough, though. The first half of the book deals with issues common to any room addition. Like any project, preparation is essential to a successful addition and author Chris Peterson believes in providing clear instructions.
The first four chapters supply detailed steps for planning and design, construction, laying the foundation and building the addition. The last two chapters showcase specific additions such as bump outs, attic conversions and other additions/conversions such as garages, basements and sunrooms.
For the first chapter, Peterson lets the homeowner evaluate if the home is suitable for an addition. Budgeting, codes, plans, schedules and green options follow.
He then provides scenarios for the expert do-it-yourselfer and the absolute beginner and for everyone in between. The hundreds of photos show each step of the process.
He thinks that anyone could build a wall form, if they want to try, and details exactly how to do the job. He also lets readers know when to call a professional, no matter how handy they are.
This is required reading for anyone contemplating an addition. Readers will get a sense of the time commitment to build an addition, the cost, and the level of expertise. They’ll also be able to have a knowledgeable discussion with a contractor if they decide to go that route.

I am planning to visit India during May 2011. I am working in multinational company as civil engineer (on H1-B). I have PhD from US uni. I am reading a lot about visa stamping probs these days. Please help me taking decision whether to take chance (& visit India) or not. will appreciate any advises especially from ppl with such recent experience. Thanks. If you qualify for EB2 then obviously go for EB2 (as its current). If you dont have a masters and have only say 2 years of experience, then instead of wasting 3 years waiting for EB2, start a GC in EB3. Once you get past I-140 the PD becomes yours. Now whenever you jump jobs and file GC again (in EB2 say) you will get the 2008 PD. So even if EB2 retrogresses in the future, you would have saved yourplace in ht equeue.
