I used to help out around a friend’s garage and inherited a bit of kit for my time, including a mint set of Buddy Club Racing Spec Dampers. I used to cruise around with the BUDCLB DC5 Honda Integra when it was still a streeter. It certainly maintained a presence and was pretty badass, even as a Honda in the land of Honda haters. About six months later, BUDCLB became a full-time track car, and by then the guys at Buddy Club NZ had taken a shine to my Rex and suggested putting a few more Buddy Club parts on it as a sort of sponsorship deal. The drag-racing bug had sunk its teeth in properly, and I guess it just grew from there. I reckon the decals look the part, and so they should — the car has almost every Buddy Club part available for the classic WRX. To be honest, Buddy Club isn’t a tuning brand I would instantly associate with Subaru, but I would freely say yes given the choice. Buddy Club carries a premium; it has never produced anything for the budget market. I’ve been really happy with everything: the exhaust flows nicely and sounds aggressive and deep, the suspension rides and handles better than any other coil-over-equipped WRX I’ve ridden in, and the P1 SF wheels… well, I have yet to see another wheel that would look as clean and staunch on my car. My favourite BC part would have to be the Racing Spec bucket seats though. Everyone who sits in them goes on about how they are the most comfortable, supportive fixed seats they have ever sat in, and I totally agree. I can drive coast to coast without discomfort, and they grip like crazy in the corners.Let’s check out what’s going on under the bonnet. Is the motor standard? I have been taking her to the Masterton Motorplex events as much as possible over the last three years. My first trip to M-town, she was bone stock except for the pod filter, and I left with a best time of 13.2 and a new addiction. Since then, every meet I race at my times drop as the car evolves along with my technique. Currently, my PB is 11.9 @ 116mph [186.7kph] at Meremere, set at the 2010 4 & Rotary Nationals.
I notice you have a bottle of laughing gas hidden away there, give us the details. I would hardly call it hidden! With the drag season approaching in the spring, I wanted to go quicker. And although N2O seemed a pretty far-out solution at first, I did a bunch of research on WRX drag racers Stateside and it seemed that nitrous is the way to go. It’s a ZEX EFI ‘wet’ kit imported from the States, and STM did the install and tune. I’m currently running the smallest jet (55-shot), and that alone was enough to push the power from 213kW to 266kW at the wheels.
