Red tide focus of Bigelow Laboratory's first presentation of summer series
WEST BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine — Phytoplankton ecologist Dr. Cynthia Heil will kick off Bigelow Laboratory’s 2011 program of summer Cafe Scientifique gatherings at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, with a discussion of the ecology of red tides and the microscopic, and often toxic, single-celled algae that cause them.
“And the Sea Turned to Blood” is the first of 10 informal “science conversations” scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Tuesday evenings, June 28 through Aug. 30, at the Boothbay Harbor Opera House, 86 Townsend Ave. in Boothbay Harbor.
Heil is developing Bigelow Laboratory’s Phytoplankton Ecology and Harmful Algal Bloom facilities to investigate causes behind the increase and spread of HABs.
The laboratory’s Cafe Scientifique talks are free and open to the public, with beer, wine and soda available for purchase. The complete 2011 summer Cafe Scientifique program is posted on the laboratory’s website at www.bigelow.org .
Demonstration on dangerous heat levels in cars
ELLSWORTH, Maine — The Hancock County Emergency Response Team in conjunction with the Ellsworth Police Department will hold a “Hot Car Demo” 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the Ellsworth Walmart parking lot. New Maine legislation now allows first responders to enter a vehicle when they find an animal is in distress. The team will have a thermometer demonstration on dangerous levels in a parked vehicle. Woodlawn Museum to host hands-on tote bag workshop
ELLSWORTH, Maine — Artist Liliane Kell will lead a Nature Prints on Canvas Bag workshop 9 a.m. to noon Friday, July 8, at Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the technique of transferring botanical designs to a large canvas tote bag. Once you know the technique, you can use it to design cards, T-shirts, boxes and more.
The cost to attend the workshop is $30 for Woodlawn members, $40 for nonmembers and includes materials. As space is limited, registrations are required by calling Woodlawn at 667-8671 or emailing events@woodlawnmuseum.org.
