Ward running for re-election

Ward is grateful to the citizens of Lethbridge who have consistently supported him since his first election as alderman in October of 1992.

Ward believes “I wouldn’t get that kind of support unless citizens were satisfied with my performance. I listen; I help if I can, but it takes a team of compatible aldermen to make things happen” Ward says he looks forward to ” working quietly, thoughtfully and cooperatively with members of the public and fellow aldermen on whatever issues the next three years might bring”.

Ward defines “success” as “being able to help individuals and groups to bring their hopes and dreams for a better Lethbridge before council and then, working as a team with council, to make those dreams a reality.” He points to many such projects over the years – indoor soccer centre; new parks and trails; playgrounds; soccer and rugby fields; housing initiatives; community stadium; community arts centre; new sub-divisions; creation of Economic Development Lethbridge with the help of the chamber of commerce; downtown renewal and the “Heart of Our City” projects; and numerous others.

This type of planned growth can only happen when there is extensive planning with public input; committed and adequate financial resources; and a spirit of cooperation.”When we all work together – things get done.” says Ward

Ward believes that “During uncertain economic times it is important to maintain financial resources, support existing services, and encourage planned growth which keeps people employed and our quality of life secure”

“Proven, experienced and reliable leadership within council is another “essential” when the economic climate is uncertain. I hope that Lethbridge citizens will support that kind of leadership and will trust me to provide it.” says Ward.

Helping people realize their dreams is a noble cause, but one that also needs a reality check from time to time. This council has focussed on supporting wants rather than needs and has created a bow wave of spending that will create even larger tax bills down the road. As an example of catering to wants, the current CIP describes Lethbridge as having amongst the most parkland of any city in North America. Why then, do we need a $25M park on the North side of town? Similarly, Vancouver is serviced by two bridges into North and West Van. Why do we need a third bridge? Building expectations with no thought for the supportability of the idea is irresponsible.
