The amount of community services taking part is outstanding. We've got a great leadership team. That's always amazing to me that people want to work long and hard to make this happen. They're doing it because they want to see it make a difference. They want to bring hope to the community." Lake County General Health District is taking a larger leadership role and expanding services. Last year, county health officials primarily provided eye screenings, tetanus shots, limited hearing screenings, some blood glucose testing and blood pressure checks. This year, the district plans to add HIV and sickle cell anemia testing, and cholesterol screening. In addition, documentation will be done on participants and services provided in order to improve offerings in the future. Lake County Jobs and Family Services honored for child support ...

The Lake County Job and Family Services Department’s Child Support Enforcement Division has received two awards from the state to recognize efforts to secure child support payments last year.
Debra Wernick, child support administrator, told Lake County commissioners Thursday that the agency was noted for Best Performance Collections on Current Support and for Best Performance Collections on Cases with Arrears.
Of the state’s 88 counties, Lake County has the 16th largest child support caseload and is 13th in total collections.
This is the sixth year in row that the county has been honored with the awards in the large caseload division, Wernick said.
“I’m not going to let you down or the county and we’ll continue to work the way we’ve always worked, doing more with less,” she said. “I’m really proud of my staff and we do a really good job collecting money for the families of Lake County. I’m hoping with your support and confidence, we’ll be able to continue to do this.”
Lake County JFS Director Matt Battiato said what’s important is being able to collect child support from people who are responsible to pay it to the people who are entitled to receive it, so that those persons don’t have to rely on other taxpayer programs to support their children.
The agency last year referred 1,339 cases to the Prosecutor’s Office for legal action for establishment or enforcement of an order.
Also, 679 cases were reviewed for modification to the child support order.
There are numerous collection tools available to the agency, such as interception of tax refunds by the Ohio Department of Taxation and IRS, bank account seizures for back due child support and driver’s license suspension.
Commissioners said they were pleased and proud of the efforts by the child support division.
“We really do appreciate the job that you do there and as we’ve said, it’s so important the work you do there,” Commissioner Daniel P. Troy said. “It takes the burden off the taxpayers and by trying to identify and locate the resources from the obligees to pay that child support so that it’s paid by them.”
Troy said if child support is not paid, then other public service programs are frequently called on to make up the difference.
“We’re real proud of what the department has done in so many areas in terms of helping children in Lake County,” the commissioner said.
